Introduction to Self-Defense is a need to address the continuous dangers that young women of our community face. Local high school senior Kate Sorbie partnered with A Beautiful Me (a Michigan-based nonprofit organization) and officers of the Shelby Township Police Department to design an introduction class into the basics of self-defense for High School Girls.

9:30am to 3:00pm in Port Huron
This opportunity will cover the reality of women today with facts and physical practice. Including general self esteem activities and four (4) hours of personal instruction taught by police officers of the Shelby Township Police Department to arm the participants with confidence. By the end of the program, the girls will have basic understanding of different types of strikes, kicks, and escape tactics so that they can be armed with the skills to defend themselves. The goal of the class is to teach the girls how to prevent and/or escape a dangerous situation.
This program was brought to life by high school senior, Kate Sorbie. As a young woman on the path to college, the reality of being a vulnerable individual in an unknown environment was a point of fear for her. She believes no woman should be paralyzed by the fear of being susceptible to sexual violation. For this reason, she vowed to help her peers be confident - beyond self esteem - in their own abilities to defend themselves.
This program is designed to focus on this issue in the community and set up sustainable change and is very important to its organizers, especially Officer Leslie Heisler who states, “I realize the benefits to the intent of the program. As both a female and a law enforcement officer, the importance of teaching our women and girls the techniques to keep themselves physically safe is sometimes overlooked.”
$10 - LIMITED SEATING! Teen girls will be provided all reinforcement activity items and lunch.
